The Loyal Order of the Moose – Elizabethtown, PA, May 4th, 1911
The Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge No. 596, held their first meetings on Center Square in the H.T. Horst building. In April of 1917, the lodge purchased this building for a symbolic $1.00. The Moose remodeled the structure and added a 3rd floor, a bowling alley and a pool room in the rear. To accommodate the growing membership, the lodge purchased in 1922 the establishment adjacent to the Moose – the Greenawalt Hotel. In 1923, they demolished the Hotel and built the Moose Theatre. The meetings were held in the basement until 1928 when the building was again expanded. Below is one poster highlighting an event held in 1937 – more Moose artifacts are on display in the Elizabethtown Historical Society’s Museum at 58-59 South Poplar St., Elizabethtown, PA.
